· The Brooklyn House of Detention (BHOD) was
  closed in 2003 to save over $5 million taxpayer
  dollars each year.

· The BHOD is an obsolete prison that doesn't meet federal
  and state standards. Some cells are 40 square feet, half
  the 80 sq. foot size recommended by the American
  Correctional Association.

· The Department of Corrections (DOC) wants to expand and reopen
  the BHOD without:
- Sufficient transitional services for inmates
- A study conducted on the environmental impact of doubling
  the size of the inmate population
- Significant community consultation or input
· The DOC has given contradictory and inaccurate information in explaining its reversal.

· Stop BHOD opposes the reopening and expansion of BHOD, which is situated
  in a critically important residential and commercial zone.
